Dear [MP's Name],
Re: Call for Support on Whistleblower Protections and Police Accountability
I am writing as your constituent and a supporter of Issy Vine’s public campaign for institutional reform in the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). Ms Vine is a former employee who blew the whistle on racism, misogyny, abuse of power, and the systemic mistreatment of whistleblowers within the MPS. Her experience has exposed serious deficiencies in existing protections for those who speak out in the public interest.
The issues raised through her campaign are deeply concerning and demonstrate an urgent need for reform. They also highlight the inadequacy of current legislative protections under the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 (PIDA), which has been repeatedly criticised for failing to prevent retaliation against whistleblowers, particularly in policing and other public institutions.
Furthermore, the Casey Review (2023) and Angiolini Inquiry underscore a broader culture of institutional failure and misconduct within policing. These reviews call for a system-wide approach to accountability and culture change. Ms Vine’s case provides a lived example of the human cost when institutions suppress truth-telling rather than supporting it.
I am asking you, as my elected representative, to:
-
Support urgent reforms to whistleblower protection legislation, including strengthening PIDA or replacing it with a more robust framework that aligns with international best practice (e.g., EU Whistleblower Protection Directive 2019/1937).
-
Call for the establishment of an Independent Office for Whistleblowers, a proposal supported by cross-party MPs and advocacy groups.
-
Raise the issue of police misconduct and the treatment of whistleblowers in Parliament, particularly in light of the findings of the Casey Review and other independent investigations.
-
Show support to Issy Vine's petition.
-
Publicly support Issy Vine’s campaign Speak Up Now UK for accountability and justice in the MPS and all other public services. Her website, www.issyvine.com, outlines her experience and proposals for change in more detail.
This is not just a matter of employment rights—it is a matter of public trust, integrity in public institutions, and upholding the rule of law. No one who speaks out against injustice should suffer retaliation.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your reply and hope you will join me in standing up for truth, transparency, and justice.
Yours sincerely,
